Managed to get my hands on an old Japanese typewriter a few days ago. Beautiful blue case, shiny metal levers and dials which create that perpetually satisfying clacking sound as you rattle off line after line of imperfect perfection. I'd been thinking about incorporating language into more of my work, and the typewriter was ideal as the quality of the letters had a similar quality to the broken edges of the brush and ink illustrations I've been creating. I had a few ideas, some old stuff which I've had in the archives, so went about creating the original text on copy paper, scanning, tweaking and refining before printing onto some 220gsm uncoated paper. I'll probably try coloured papers next, maybe 300gsm GF Smith Wild – but so far I'm quite happy with the look and feel.
